Desert Discovery
Citizen Science. Adventure. Community.
Desert Discovery, or DD as it is affectionately known to participants, is a volunteer run, not for profit citizen science group, with members from all over Australia and the world.
We were formed in 1996 by a group of outback adventurers and nature enthusiasts. Over the years the group has grown and become increasingly focussed on contributing to citizen science.
Every two years we go out on a new project, located at a carefully selected site that has not had much scientific data collected in the past. We then spend a couple of weeks documenting all the life that we can find. We have teams dedicated to plants, birds, mammals and reptiles, fungi and even a team looking at what evidence they can fine when the animals are not that obvious (tracks and scats).
All data we collect is shared with museums, universities and other publicly available resources, including iNaturalist and other like apps.
